Elvis Cinema and Popular Culture by Douglas Brode.
|
Though Elvis Presley's music is widely credited as starting a sea change in American popular
culture, his films are often dismissed as base marketing vehicles, commercially successful but
insignificant. Beyond the formulaic plotlines and increasing reliance on weak songs, however,
the films - and Elvis - serve as profound cultural touchstones, revealing changing American aesthetics
more than a changing Elvis. Elvis's rebel image in 1956, as a guitar-swinging incarnation of Brando
or Dean, had by 1969's Change of Habit become safe and sterile.
This work demonstrates how Elvis, through his films, reflected a shifting social, cultural and
political landscape in America. Encompassing all 31 movies and two 1970s documentaries, it
provides a film-by-film study of Elvis Presley and America, and argues that each film reflects
the society for which it was made. Throughout his career, most of Elvis's characters combined
rebellion with wholesome, traditional ideals, but the public's perspective changed, and what was
considered radical in 1954 was called reactionary by 1970. Studied sequentially, his films reflect
those cyclical ideals, and unconsciously portray America's process of renewal and redefinition of self.
The book will be released in Spring/Summer 2006 by
McFarland Publishing. Paperback, ISBN 0-7864-2526-1.

Lips by Byron Edwards.
|
Lips solves the mystery of a missing week in the life of Elvis Presley.
"On a bet, Elvis Presley and a "cousin" of his spend a week on the run. They are trying to
evade capture by America's law enforcement agencies. How can the most famous entertainer in
the world elude the police?
In a fun tale of adventure, the King of Rock and Roll escapes from Graceland, the Memphis
Mafia and the detectives of the Memphis police department. He travels across America to a
specific time and place in Mexico.
During the course of this lost week in the life of Elvis, he learns much about himself as
a man. In October 1970, Elvis explores the ruins of a pyramid complex in Mexico - and himself.
Elvis' "cousin" doesn't expect to actually like Elvis Presley as a person. However, as he
gets to know him, the individual, he finds that he grows quite fond of Elvis. Travel with
Elvis as he attempts to avoid capture and learn what the man himself was really like."

Elvis Religion: Exploring the Cult of The King by Gregory L. Reece.
|
"The first portrait of Elvis as religious icon From Graceland to Las Vegas, from fans to
impersonators, from novels, films and popular music to internet websites, outsider art
and tabloid conspiracy theories, the cult of Elvis Presley has, since his death, become
ever more imaginative. Elvis Religion explores the frequently bizarre and weird - yet
sometimes moving - phenomena growing out of this world and investigates what it is that
has turned the King of Rock 'n' Roll into a god-like figure. Elvis, we discover, is found everywhere.
He is not just an icon for late night lonely hearts in Memphis, or Elvis impersonators on
a Vegas stage, but is the inspiration
behind the violent visions of movies like Mystery Train and Wild at Heart, the kitsch sanctuary
of Graceland Too, the music
of Kirsty MacColl and Paul Simon, and the internet church for whom he is a supernatural
being who dwells in the constellation of Orion. Gregory L Reece makes a journey to discover
the Jumpsuit Jesus for himself, which takes him into the heart of fan obsession. Along the way,
he discovers that if Elvis Saves it is because now, more than ever, the Memphis Messiah seems
like a prophet for our times".

New book by Lew Allen.
New Elvis photo book announced: Thanks to a strike by the newspapers in Cleveland Ohio the
then 17 year old Lew Allen, writing for the school's magazine, was the only photographer to
"shoot" Elvis during two performances in November 1956 in the Cleveland Arena. Just two days
before Elvis' first movie "Love Me Tender" had premiered. These images of Elvis (and other
rock and roll stars like Buddy Holly, Bobby Darin, Frankie Avalon, Paul Anka en The Everly
Brothers) are currently on display in the "Birth Of Rock" exhibition which is part of the
"Footsteps Of Elvis" exhibition.
Lew Allen informed Elvis News that next year a photobook with his images will be released
through a UK publisher. According to Lew Allen his pictures, with one exception, have not
been published before (but at least three are available on-line from poster shops).

Child Bride: The Untold Story of Priscilla Beaulieu Presley by Suzanne Finstad
|
This book will be re-issued by Three Rivers Press in January 2006.
According to my information this is the fourth re-issue. The first was by
Harmony Books in 1997. The covers of the first three releases can be seen
in the bookshelf.
The book is an unauthorized biography of Priscilla Presley, focusing on unproven
and salacious allegations made by Grant Currie, a friend of Elvis during his military
service in Germany. Finstad, an attorney, attempts to psychoanalyze Priscilla and members
of her family.
The paperback has 400 pages with ISBN 0307336956.

Various news
Since the last news flash in May, several new books were released. For a complete list of released
and upcoming books, see Books in Print.
In May, most notable releases were
Elvis by the Presleys,
Inside Graceland
and
Dewey and Elvis.
The last one did not get too much "airplay", but is one that
definitely deserves a closer read.
In June, Bill Burk's book
A Candle in the Wind was released,
and Robert Gordon's book
"The King on the road" was re-released. A record collector's guide edited by Paul Kennedy,
Warman's Field Guide
, also saw the light.
Just released a couple of days ago is
Behind the Image, volume 2
, which seems to be even better than volume 1 (see above news item). For the rest of July
you can save your money: no other releases are scheduled.
In August, "Graceland's Table" will be released. Read David Neale's review of a
preview copy ...

Someone whose daily tasks centered around keeping the 'King of Rock & Roll' happy,
whose every move was designed to please the greatest music legend the entertainment
world has ever known. Here is that picture, as painted by Nancy Rooks. Nancy worked for Elvis
from 1967 until his untimely death in 1977. Read her stories of what those years were like, of

O Rei de Las Vegas by Waldenir Cecon.
|
The Bazilian fan club Elvis Presley's World Fan Club released the first book of the
collection Essential Para Fãs (Essential to fans) last February. This collection of 3 books will be
released yearly until 2007 and it will comprise Elvis' entire career. The first volume's
title is "O Rei de Las Vegas" (King of Las Vegas). The book is written by Waldenir Cecon,
it has 240 pages and it's all written in Portuguese.
Design
This books's cover is appelative with an Elvis' picture on stage over Las
Vegas. Back cover has several Elvis' pictures on stage too. Inside we can
find several Elvis photos (none new) and cd covers (official and imported
ones) with Elvis' concerts in Las Vegas. All pictures are in black and white
and, to me, the only negative point in this book is the picture's quality
which isn't the best.
Content
The book starts with some brief autor notes to help the reader and to reveal
what the next two books will include. O Rei de Las Vegas has 16 chapters,
one for each of the 15 Elvis' seasons in Las Vegas between 1969 and 1976 and
another one for the Lake Tahoe seasons. Each chapter is named after the song
the author thinks marked the season. Each chapter starts with a little text
and some pictures of the season. Then we have the complete list of each
concert of the season, with its date, the kind of concert (opening, closing,
dinner or midnight) and - when possible - the list of the songs Elvis sang.
Then we have testimonials from fans who were there, the images that were
made (by fans or not), official and imported cd's with the concerts (along
with the picture of the cover) and the songs they include. To finish the
chapter, there's a list of all songs Elvis sang during the season (even if
he sang only one line), the jumpsuits, the musicians, the number of concerts
and the number of fans in the audience. Lake Taho's chapter has a text about
each season there between 1971 and 1976 and the list of the official and
imported cd's, along with their covers and the songs included.
Conclusion
This small book (19x12,5 cm) is a in fact, a big book. It's very complete,
with lots of information and very easy to look for information. Finally,
there is a book written in Portuguese with all the information about Elvis'
seasons in Las Vegas. To all the fans who cannot read English and to the
fans who want all the information in the same volume, this is the ideal
book.
This book has only 500 copies.

Tarzan has left the building. Article by Steven Price.
This is not the title of a new book, but there seems to be quite some discussion about
the book "Tarzan Presley" by Nigel Cox, released in 2004 ...
"Why can't Nigel Cox's novel Tarzan Presley, in which pop icons Tarzan and Elvis
are one and the same, be sold overseas?"
When Nigel Cox was writing his novel Tarzan Presley, a whimsical re-imagining of the
Tarzan myth in which Tarzan grows up in the wilds of the Wairarapa and goes on to
become the King of Rock'n'roll, he felt a prickle of concern. Copyright. "Could be
an issue, Nigel," he thought. "But what was I going to do, write a letter to ... whom,
I couldn't imagine ... saying, 'I think I might be going to write a book in which a
character from one of your books might appear, though in radically changed form - is that okay?'"

Essential Elvis Interviews compiled by Andrew Hearn.
|
The interview book, which had a working title of "Elvis Talk", is now called "Essential Elvis Interviews".
According to the lastest issue of Essential Elvis magazine, there are two reasons for the last-minute change:
'Firstly, we've been recently been informed that our good friend Trevor Cajiao is working on a second volume
of his own book Talking Elvis
from 1997. In an effort not to confuse the two books, we made a decision
to chose a title that's not so familiar. Secondly, as it's such a great book, we wanted to incorporate the
name of our magazine in the title. We are also proud to announce that guitarist John Wilkinson has written
the foreword.'

Elvis: The Documentaries by Joseph A. Tunzi.
|
Late spring of 2005 from J.A.T. Publishing comes Elvis: The Documentaries. Joseph Tunzi has put together a
beautiful 125-page photo journal that will take you into Elvis Presley's two acclaimed documentaries,
including That's The Way It Is, and Golden Globe winner Elvis On Tour.
In 1970, Elvis Presley was in the middle of the greatest musical comeback any entertainer ever experienced.
The most exciting aspect of his returnwas his triumphant Las Vegas return to the concert stage. He decided
that a film chronicling his live performances would be a way to convey where he was at today and entertain
those who could not come out to see him. The resulting film was That's The Way It Is, a movie Elvis called
his best in a decade.
In April, 1972, Elvis took off on his fourth tour of the 70's and the cameras went with him. The concerts
and the film that resulted, Elvis On Tour, were rapturously received. Elvis On Tour remains the only time
Elvis publicly reflected on his life and it was awarded the Golden Globe for best documentary of 1972.
Elvis: The Documentaries takes you behind the scenes during the making of these seminal films. With new facts on their
production and over 135 unpublished photographs, Elvis: The Documentaries is an essential addition to everyone's
Elvis library. You will see Elvis during rehearsals, in the studio, and onstage entertaining his friends and fans.
J.A.T. Publishing has again created a book that will be both beautiful and informative. All J.A.T. products are
strictly limited editions so order your copy today. Elvis: The Documentaries is an outstanding book
that showsyou why Elvis was proud to have made these films.

Untold Gold The Stories Behind Elvis's #1 Hits by Ace Collins.
|
This book was announced some time ago, but now some more info is
available from the publisher:
"The stories behind some of the most popular singles in history.
The stories behind the luck, inspiration, and timing that brought hits
like "Heartbreak Hotel," "Don't Be Cruel," "In the Ghetto," and
"A Little Less Conversation" to life are told in this look at some
of the world's most popular hits. Fans will be given the inside story
of how these and other of the best known rock songs were written, why
they were recorded, and how they became hits. Along the way, they will
meet and get to know the men and women who wrote songs for the "King,"
follow the route these songs took to Elvis, and understand how he reshaped
the songs to fit his vision. The author spent countless hours interviewing
songwriters, digging through dusty charts, and listening to demos in order
to uncover the great stories he tells here. Each song in this book is a
commentary on where the world was and what was making it tick, making
these songs as much a glimpse into the life of America as into the life of Elvis."
"Ace Collins is the author of many "behind the songs" books, including
Hymns That Have Inspired America; Songs Sung Red, White, and Blue; and
The Stories Behind the Traditions of Christmas. His best-remembered
nonfiction work is Lassie: A Dog's Life, which was the basis for a
PBS special and an ABC primetime Christmas special. Collins has
appeared on such television shows as CBS This Morning, CNN,
Entertainment Tonight, Good Morning America, NBC Nightly News,
and The Today Show. He has written magazine features for more
than 100 publications and has won the Angel Award of Excellence
for the nation's best inspirational magazine feature. He is also
a three-time winner of the Golden Quill Award. He is the feature
writer for Texas Music Magazine and the editor of World Evangelism."

Elvis - Behind The Image - Welcome To His World - The Book Volume 2 by Bud Glass
|
In 2003 Bud Glass and Praytome Publishing released "
Elvis: Behind The Image" - The Book.
The DVD with the same title was already released when the book came out but contrary to the rumours,
the book did not contain snapshots from the concerts to be seen on DVD. The book, because of its style,
layout and content, became quickly the queen of candid books. While the interviews on DVD try to bring
a little light into the private life style of our man, the book continues to do so with its great pictures.
Today Praytome Publishing is proud to be able to announce the follow up to the first volume:
"Elvis - Behind The Image - Welcome To His World - The Book Volume 2". The ideas for releasing
the second volume were already revealed to Elvis Books a year ago
(see here).
A new high quality hardcover book full of colour candids to feast your eyes on. Bud Glass has
compiled more interesting stories about Elvis, taken directly from the diary of Sandi Miller.
Again Russ Howe shares his collection with rare and unique Elvis pictures you've never seen before.
While Volume 1 had the "California Homes" as a special highlight be surprised what Volume 2 will come up with!

Elvis Aaron Presley - A Candle In The Wind by Bill Burk
|
Bill Burk's new book will be titled "Elvis Aaron Presley - A Candle In The Wind".
This new A4 size 100 pages coffee table book will mostly be a photo book with rare pictures
Bill has been saving up for several years now. But it will contain several stories too;
stories about Elvis and girlfriends, Elvis and police, Elvis and black entertainers,
Elvis and co-stars, Elvis and the Memphis Mafia ... and the centrepiece, the untold stories.
The very first story in the book, which Bill got in August 1987, will be
"the most unusual story of an Elvis concert you will ever read" as Bill Burk
told us. He aims for a release in late February 2005, but realistically it could slip to March 2005.

Dewey and Elvis: The Life and Times of a Rock 'n' Roll Deejay by Louis Cantor
|
The Red, Hot and Blue deejay who helped legitimize race music and introduce Elvis Presley to the world.
It all started in 1949 when Memphis's own WDIA became the first radio station in the country to
switch to all-black programming. After WDIA went off the air, WHBQ decided to capture some
of their newly discovered black audience by putting "Daddy-O-Dewey" Phillips--the most popular
white deejay in the mid-South-- on a new show, Red, Hot and Blue. Although the show originally
aired for just fifteen minutes a night, its impact was immeasurable.
While Elvis and Sun Records were still virtually unknown--and two full years before Alan Freed
famously "discovered" rock 'n' roll--Dewey Phillips was playing Howlin' Wolf, B. B. King, and
Muddy Waters. Phillips is part of rock 'n' roll history for being the first major disc jockey to
play Elvis Presley (and subsequently to conduct the first live, on-air interview with Elvis).
Louis Cantor argues, however, for an expanded understanding of Phillips's role in turning a huge
white audience on to previously forbidden race music. Phillips's zeal for rhythm and blues
legitimized the sound and set the stage for both Elvis's subsequent success and the rock 'n'
roll revolution of the 1950s.
Using personal interviews, documentary sources, and the oral history collections at the
Center for Southern Folklore and the University of Memphis, Cantor presents a very personal
view of the disc jockey while arguing for his place as an essential part of rock 'n' roll
history. Loaded with anecdotes and insights about key figures, including Elvis's close friend
George Klein and Sun Records's Sam Phillips, Dewey and Elvis will be irresistible to anyone
interested in Elvis, the Memphis music scene, or the history of rock 'n' roll.
